Since August 11th 2017, it was decided that Chileans with ordinary passports that has a validity of at least six months, are subject to stay in Vietnam for a shorter stay than 90 days, visa free. However, if you wish to stay in Vietnam for more than 90 days or want to go to Vietnam in order to generate income (for work), then you will need to apply for a Vietnam visa. You have two options then: either you apply for a Visa on Arrival or through the Vietnam Embassy in Chile.
If you go for option number 1 – visa on arrival, you will only need your computer (or phone) and internet. You can apply for this from everywhere in the world. It is easy, fast, effective and you don’t have to send any important documents anywhere. What you need to do is fill out an Online Application Form, wait for your confirmation email and you will normally receive an Approval Letter within 2 working days. When everything is done, don’t forget to print out the finalized document, bring it to the airport in Vietnam and get it stamped by one of the immigration officers.
This visa will help you get a multi-entry visa, so you can visit other countries and still be able to come back to Vietnam without having to apply for a visa again. However, be noted that if you do apply for a visa on arrival, you can only enter Vietnam by air. So if you are planning on coming with car, bus, train, et cetera, this visa will not be a good option for you.
If you go for option number 2, which is to apply for a visa through a Vietnamese Embassy, you will be instructed step by step on how to apply for a visa there. You will need to come to the embassy at least two times. The first time, you will submit the required documents, and the second time you have to pick up your Vietnam visa. This can be a bit more inconvenient if you don’t live close by for example, and it also takes a bit longer to apply for and receive the visa. However, it is one of the options so if this fits you better, you will be glad to know that it’s one of the choices.

But as was stated above, if you do not plan on staying for more than 90 days in Vietnam, then you can enter the country visa free. This will leave you with a lot of time to explore the country. However, be careful… many people end up falling in love with Vietnam and stays in the country for much longer than they intended to! There are just too much to do in the country, and if you like to travel in a slower way, then applying for a visa to stay longer than 90 days is a good idea. Why not start up north, rent a motorbike (if you are used to driving one, otherwise I would not recommend this since the roads can be difficult!), drive through Vietnam’s rural landscape in the north and visit the Hmong. Ha Giang is another popular route up north. If you want to relax in one of the many beaches, there are a ton to choose from. Go along the coast and you will surely find one you will like. There is also the option to go to Cat Ba islands, from Halong Bay. You can also go to Phu Quoc island, down south. If you want to go somewhere where you can enjoy the nightlife, why not head to the big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. The two cities that never sleep! There’s so many options and activities for you to choose from in Vietnam, that 90 days passes very fast.
So don’t wait any longer – book your flight ticket and come to Vietnam, where you will always find a beautiful beach, tropical climate and UNESCO world heritage sites that will make your jaw drop. See you on the other side!
